These days, most people know him as Mark. Or Mr. Weinstein, president and CEO of the Independent Colleges and Universities Benefits Association.
But for a stretch there in the early 1980s, Mark Weinstein — proud member of the good-doing Volunteer Illini Projects team the UI — went by Lou. As in Grant.
“For a good laugh over the semesters,” he says, “my class of volunteers — who spearheaded VIP in the late ’70s and early ’80s — picked characters from the ‘Mary Tyler Moore Show,’ such a Lou, Suzanne, Georgette, Ted, Murray, Chuckles, Phyllis, Rhoda, Mrs. Morgenstern and Carlton, to identify each of us.”
The work they planned on the third floor of the Illini Union — and then went and carried out — was no laughing matter.
“VIP provides thousands of hours of service each year to children, disabled, aged, prisoners, teenagers and other adults,” Weinstein says.
“I hope VIP continues to provide students the opportunity to give back to our community and, of course, have lots of fun with fellow Illini volunteers along the way.”
