Andy Regal ('83) would like to dedicate his UI-at-150 contribution to the memory of Mari Szatkowski.
“My wonderful memories are laced with sadness because my dear friend and news director passed away last year,” he says.
They got to know one another long before Regal started his stretch at The Wall Street Journal, where he has held a number of titles, from global head of video (2015-17) to senior consultant (since March).
Ms. Szatkowski ran the news at WPGU Radio, then located in the basement of Weston Hall.
“I spent many hours there as sports director,” Regal says. “And the staff of DJs, sports and news anchors and business folks all took their jobs very seriously.
“I have often remarked that the work I continue today is rooted in all that I did and learned at WPGU.
“And I’ll never forget the magical moments of walking up the PGU basement stairs and heading outside on a glorious football Saturday to Memorial Stadium or on a chilly winter night to Assembly Hall with my recording equipment to cover my beloved Illini.”
