Chinyere Osuji

Assistant professor of sociology | Rutgers University-Camden | Class of 2000

“I am not Latinx,” Chinyere Osuji says, but that didn’t make the future college professor feel any less at home when she frequented La Casa Cultural Latina.

“I remember that the cultural center was open to everyone and, on many occasions, welcomed U of I students with many delicious hot meals,” says the Class of 2000 grad, now a Rutgers-Camden assistant professor of sociology and global race scholar.

“I remember initially learning about the experiences of Afro-descendants in Latin America and the Caribbean at U of I, something that has guided my career as a sociologist, Brazilianist and scholar of the African Diaspora.”
