Lisa Ruiz

Head, Latin America Area | AbbVie Regulatory Affairs | Class of 1983

Three-and-a-half decades after having him for class, Lisa Ruiz remains “profoundly grateful for the insight and guidance of Professor Jim Corbin."

“Like many animal science majors, I had long dreamed of becoming a veterinarian,” Ruiz (BS ’83, animal science) says from Chicago. “Professor Corbin worked hard to make sure that I and many others like me knew that there was a world of career options out there us beyond vet med — and he was absolutely right.

“He inspired me to turn a personal low in to a time of possibility.”

Things turned out quite all right in the end for Ruiz, who now heads up Latin America area regulatory affairs for AbbVie.

Among her other favorite memories from her Illini years:

— The countless hours she spent at the undergrad library.

“As a lifelong lover of books, it was a place of endless information long before people could answer questions via Google.”

— Unwinding at T-Birds bar.

“It was a great, casual place to relax after a long week of studying and the clientele was a diverse mix of students. Everyone was welcome.”
