What’s a hard-charging chemistry/engineering student to do with a one-hour break between morning classes?
More days than not, future energy industry executive Bud Cherry (BS ’62, chemistry; MS ’63, nuclear engineering) made his way to a favorite spot in the Illini Union — where the “comfy chairs” were.
“My typical plan was to have a coffee and grilled Danish and then reside in one of the very comfortable Student Union chairs. This often preceded a short nap,” says the CEO of New Jersey-headquartered Eagle Creek Renewable Energy, honored in 2012 with the UI College of Engineering’s 2012 Alumni Award for Distinguished Service.
“One trip as a recruiter for a nuclear fuel company five years after completing my master’s, I ironically found myself with a similar schedule. Same coffee plus nap.
“Almost missed the next session but the bottomless chair nap provided an excellent rewind of years at U of I.”
