Like seemingly every other UI student — then or now — Friday nights were a time for Jim McKinstray to go through his weekly “decompression ritual.”
“Food, friends, fish, libations,” says the Gies College of Business grad, who earned his bachelor’s degree in finance in 1975, then embarked on a 30-year career with The Andersons.
McKinstray could check off all of the above in one place — the late, great DeLuxe Lunch and Billiards, his favorite stop both as a student in the early ’70s and a townie in the early ’80s.
“They served awesome fish sandwiches on Fridays, had ice cold long neck beers and hosted a wide and interesting collection of locals, students, professors and others from C-U,” says McKinstray, who’s now enjoying retirement.
