Vernon Hui

Senior director | Oracle Data Cloud | Class of 1998

Twenty years later, Vernon Hui can still see — and yes, smell — the gym where he made like Kiwane Garris and Jerry Hester in the ’90s.

The Assembly Hall, WIMPE was not, but for a computer engineering major looking to work up a sweat, it did the trick.

“I spent a lot of time there in between classes working out and playing basketball,” says Hui, a 1998 UI grad now working at Oracle in Seattle after a 15-year run at Microsoft.

“The floors were always warped over the summer and into the fall due to the summer humidity each year because there was no air conditioning, if memory serves me right. Even as I write this, I can take a deep breath and smell the musty sweat of the gym.”
