To then-doctoral student and now-Texas educator Alain Lawo-Sukam, Michael Palencia-Roth was much more than a favorite professor.
“He guided my academic steps and provided a warm environment for growth,” Lawo-Sukam says. “He has become a second father to me.”
That remains the case today, says Lawo-Sukam, who earned his Ph.D. in Spanish from the UI in 2005.
Since 2014, he has been an associate professor of Hispanic studies and Africana studies at Texas A&M.
