Lucky for him, Art Markman’s second year of grad school coincided with the grand opening of the Beckman Institute.
“And I immediately put myself on the list to get a desk there,” says the two-degree UI grad and Annabel Irion Worsham Centennial Professor of Psychology at the University of Texas (MA ’90, Ph.D. ’92).
“There is a bronze statue of Arnold Beckman in the main entrance of the building. I spent a couple of years trying to get everyone to rub the forehead of the statue for luck, hoping that some day the statue’s forehead would be brightly buffed.
“Unfortunately, it didn’t catch on.”
