Craig Scott can sum up his Illinois experience in one anecdote.
“I have many vivid memories about places and events; the Union video gaming — it was a test site for the latest game releases; the ’83 amazing football games — and Rose Bowl loss; the pizza at the old Illini Inn on Fourth Street. But I must say that the first thing that comes to mind is walking back to my frat house after study on campus and walking past the Observatory,” says the Big Apple-based aerospace company president (BS ’83, engineering).
“Must have been 1 a.m. I decided to walk up to the steel door and try to open it, and lo and behold it was unlocked.
“I proceeded to walk in to find an astronomy grad student looking through the big refracting telescope and, to make a long story short, ended up staying for hours helping to record data on dual star systems.
“In a nutshell, this is what learning was about at UIUC — staying focused on your path, yet at the same time it was an environment that encouraged and supported learning wherever you so happened to venture.
“Great memories, to say the least.”
