Paul Ellinger

VP, CFO and comptroller, UI System | 2025 ACES Alumni Award of Merit | Class of 1982

Meet three-degree alum Paul Ellinger, who arrived at the University of Illinois as an 18-year-old first-generation college student and has hung around for 46 of 49 years since.

Other than one small section immediately after receiving his Ph.D. in finance — 1992-95, assistant professor of agricultural economics, Texas A&M — Ellinger’s resume is as orange and blue as you’ll find, with titles including professor, department head, vice provost, associate chancellor and, since the summer of 2021, vice president, CFO and comptroller for the UI System.

The featured speaker at the College of ACES’ May convocation has finished 17 marathons, is the proud co-owner/manager of a central Illinois grain farm and enjoys hiking and biking, especially in national parks.

Ellinger took Editor Jeff D’Alessio for a virtual tour of some of his most memorable places and spaces on and around the UI campus.

Where I interviewed for my first job at Illinois

Mumford Hall, for a faculty position. Coincidentally, during the interview, I received a call from the Texas A&M College Station Fire Department informing me that my house had been struck by lightning and briefly caught fire — though it was quickly brought under control.

I still don’t know what kind of “sign” that lightning strike was meant to be.

Where my hosts took me out to dinner

At every campus interview, my hosts took me to Timpone’s — and I always ordered the seafood risotto. I’m not saying I based my job decisions on that dish ... but it definitely didn’t hurt.

The spot that reminds me most of home

The Morrow Plots. I grew up on a corn and soybean farm near Saunemin, Illinois — our graduating class had just 18 people. Coming to the University of Illinois was quite the transition, but seeing those plots of corn always made me feel a little more at home — just with fewer tractors.

Where I’d take a newcomer I wanted to impress

I’d start early in the morning, with the sun shining through the Alma Mater — a perfect, welcoming view. Then we’d stroll down the Quad, ending at the top of the auditorium steps for a breathtaking view of Quad, Illini Union and campus life.

Where I was when I got great news

Mumford Hall, in the department head’s office, and now the Henry Administration Building, in the vice president and CFO’s office. The best moments are when faculty and staff accept our offer to join this great university. Hiring and promoting the best and brightest faculty and staff are some of the most important and rewarding responsibilities we have.

The one structure that should never be messed with

State Farm Center. My father tells me he watched it being constructed. As an undergrad, I only missed two basketball games and attended many concerts.

My favorite place to think

Meadowbrook Park, just southeast of campus — especially on long walks with my dog, Riggs. Nature is a great stimulant for reflection and clarity. It’s where ideas settle and perspective returns.

My favorite section of any library

As a student, I enjoyed the privacy and quiet intimacy of the Stacks — a perfect place to focus, reflect or simply escape the buzz of campus life.

My favorite non-building

The Arboretum — especially in the spring and fall, when the flowers bloom and the trees are at their best.

Once again, nature proves to be a great boost for both the mind and mood.

My favorite place to eat or drink

It’s a tie: Just BEE Acai (I’m a loyal “Bee Nutty” fan) and Cracked (“Hungry Chief” financial officer all the way). The amazing staff at both places know my order the moment I walk in — great people who make great food.
