Polymer technical director | UCSB Materials Research Lab | Class of 2010

If it was a Thursday afternoon in the late 2000s, it was “wine time” — as the jingle Rachel Behrens created went.

“One of my favorite memories was going to the Krannert Center for their Thursday afternoon wine tastings,” Behrens (Ph.D. ’10, analytical chemistry) says from California, where she’s in her fifth year as the Polymer Technical Director at UC-Santa Barbara’s Materials Research Laboratory.

“It was so convenient as we worked just across the street in the Chemical and Life Sciences Building. My group members and I would go after group meeting or after long experiments in the laser lab and relax with the free tastings from local restaurants.

“It was always fun to experience the variety of wines that was offered and to purchase a glass — or two — of our favorite after the tasting. It was a great way to get to know my lab mates better and gave me something to look forward to every Thursday.

“I even created my own jingle, singing ‘It’s wine time! It’s wine time!’ — which I would sing every week, as we were getting ready to walk over.

“One of my friends and former lab mates  still sings it whenever we have a glass of wine together.”
