An Illini love story, DeLuxe Lunch and Billiards edition ...

“My girlfriend at the time, Mary Greenwald, and I both received our bachelor´s degrees in 1975 and master´s in 1977," says former JP Morgan Chase executive VP Tom Cartwright. "After a busy week of classes, we would go on a date every Friday night to DeLuxe Lunch and Billiards on Green Street in Campustown for a fried fish sandwich and, for me, a cold bottle of beer.

"Even though it was almost 40 years ago, we still remember the very kind waitress, Pearl, who always seemed to look out for us and produce a booth for us, no matter how busy it was.

“We especially remember the night of February 14, 1975. That was the night Mary and I were engaged. I proposed after our customary dinner at DeLuxe and happily Mary accepted.

“DeLuxe is long gone, but when we travel back for homecoming, you can be sure we´ll take a walk down Green Street and remember with fascinating fondness all those Friday nights long past, and think of those yet to come.”
