Jeff Johnson

President, Hearst newspaper division | Former San Francisco Chronicle publisher | Class of 1981

Nearly four decades later, Jeff Johnson hasn’t forgotten what he learned in Mark Roszkowski’s business law class.

Nor have several of his housemates from those days.

"Mark Roszkowski definitely left an impression on me as well as several of my fraternity brothers,” says Johnson (BS '81, accounting), says the Hearst newspaper president and former San Francisco Chronicle publisher, who was was named Editor & Publisher's 2017 Publisher of the Year. "Mark taught with passion, but also translated the law and related subjects into examples that left lasting impressions.

“I remember him talking about the role of insurance and how you should only insure yourself against damages that you could not afford to endure. I thought of him every time I was at Best Buy and they asked if I wanted insurance on a $49 purchase. I emphatically said no.

“In researching Mark, I saw that he passed away unexpectedly. He will be missed.”
