The civil engineering education was top-notch but it’s what Preeti Ghuman experienced outside the classroom at Illinois that wound up shaping her future.
“First, as a freshman I was introduced to the American Society of Civil Engineers,” the 1997 alumna says from Huntington Beach, Calif. “Since about 50 percent of women leave engineering mid-career, I volunteered to serve on the Committee on Professional Advancement.
“I was appointed to the eight-person committee by the president-elect of ASCE in October 2019 and have been asked to serve a second term in 2020-21.
“Second, I joined Alpha Omicron Pi as a sophomore and lived in the sorority house on Matthews Ave. my junior and senior years. Four of my best friends today are sorority sisters.
“I have very fond memories of U of I and am thankful that I had the opportunity to receive an excellent engineering education.”
