Maddie Kelly

Executive director | Oak Lawn Park District | Class of 1978

Maddie Kelly has so many favorite places and spaces, she could write a book.

"However, if I have to narrow it down to one, it would be Memorial Stadium on a crisp, blue-sky autumn day," says the executive director of the Oak Lawn Park District.

“Although the football team was not great in the ’70s, we didn’t care. We were in Block I and lived for halftime and the Chief. When the 'Three-in-One' would begin, chills would run up and down my spine. We would all be in a frenzy as our beloved Illini Indian would dance up and down the field.

“He was always considered a symbol of honor and respect for Native Americans, and I am heartbroken that our Illini spirit has been taken away.

“I loved my years in Champaign. My dad, daughter and son are also alums. We bleed orange and blue. But something is missing now that the Chief is gone.”
