Bill Self

Bill Self

3 seasons, 3 NCAA tournaments | 78-24 as Illini basketball coach (2000-03)

It’s been years since his last beer here but Bill Self can still recite the catchy slogan of his favorite C-U watering hole.

“In Champaign, the place I probably enjoyed the most, other than my home and my workplace, was Tumble Inn,” the one who got away says from Lawrence, Kan., where he’s 16-for-16 on NCAA tournament trips, including one national title, as Kansas Jayhawks coach.

“It’s still there and it’s probably still a cash cow. I loved tumbling in and I very rarely stumbled out, but it is a great place.”

Other favorite local stops for Self, who coached Illinois to a share of two Big Ten titles in his three seasons as Lon Kruger’s successor?

“I really enjoyed playing golf at Champaign Country Club. As far as any facilities outside of basketball, I loved Huff Hall — the old basketball gym and current volleyball gym where we did our late-night scrimmage and things like that. I thought that facility had a great feel to it.

“There are some good places in Champaign but I do think Tumble Inn was my favorite.”
